Words & Images: A Collaboration Between Writers and Artists

The Windham Art Gallery is pleased to present Words & Images: A Collaboration curated by Stuart Copans, a WAG Artist, and Arlene Distler, a representative of Write Action--who received a grant from the Crosby Foundation, which will provide support, in part, for the exhibit. Words & Images represents a collaboration between writers and artists that will include poems, excerpts from short stories and a children's book along with paintings, photographs, a treasure hunt, and a room-sized installation down the street from the gallery at an artist's studio. This exhibition represents a four-month process in which artists and writers met, teamed up, and created unique collaborations. Several of the participants are member-artists from WAG, with many of the other artists and all of the writers being guests invited from the community. The exhibition will be on display from Friday, June 1 through Sunday, July 1, with an opening reception on Friday, June 1, from 5-8 PM, during Gallery Walk.

Write Action In The Community

  • Open readings are held four times a year to provide a forum for local writers.
  • The Write Action Book features many of the local authors who have read their work at a Write Action event.
  • The Award for Excellence in Creative Writing is presented annually to a Brattleboro Union High School senior as part of senior awards night.
  • Wayne Carhart Holds ForthWrite Action has a scholarship program in the works to support young people’s writing and help children attend local summer writing camps.
  • In 2006 Write Action will award the first annual Marty Jezer Award for Excellence in Journalism in honor of noted author, journalist, and activist Marty Jezer, first president of the Write Action boad of directors, who passed away in June of 2005.
  • Write Action plays an active role in planning and organizing the annual Brattleboro Literary Festival that takes place each October.
  • The Write Action annual picnic is a social event and open reading, a chance to “network” and “shmooze.”
  • Write Action recently joined the Brattleboro area’s new Alliance For The Arts, to help promote the literary arts in Windham County.
  • Write Action has initiated an annual writers’ contest, in collaboration with the Brattleboro Reformer. The first contest, held in 2005, had as its theme, “Life in Windham County.”
