Write
Action is a community-based, grass-roots writer’s organization
formed in 1999 “to strengthen a community of writers in Brattleboro
and the surrounding area; and to nurture, encourage, and promote
the literary arts in the at-large community”.
We exist because of an activist, vibrant base of writers in southeastern
Vermont, and because of an engaged community of readers. In this,
we feel very fortunate – Vermont is fertile ground for writers!
An important part of our commitment to writers is Write Action's
email newsletter. Now going out to over 300 people, the newsletter
highlights literary events in the tri-state region. There are also
updates on writing groups, and writer’s opportunities.

We need your help.
Participation in Write Action requires no dues, but we provide
a weekly newsletter to over 300 subscribers, several open
readings a year, a short story and a poetry contest each
summer with prizes, writing prizes at the BUHS awards night,
and a weekly poetry hour over WVEW-FM. We have an emergency
fund for writers in need. We assist at the annual Brattleboro
Literary Festival and represent writers in joint arts endeavors
in the area. Although these activities do not cost a great
deal of money, they do involve costs.
We invite donations of any amount by check to Write Action,
P.O. Box 822, Brattleboro, VT 05301 or through Pay Pal on
our website (writeaction.net). We ask only once a year. Your
contribution is tax deductible.
Thank you.

Intrinsic to our founding as a grass-roots organization, Write Action
holds at least two open readings a year, and often more. One
is always at the Brattleboro Literary Festival. We take great pride
in helping to bring together the writing community for
this annual, free weekend-long celebration of literature featuring
renowned and up-and-coming authors. BLF is an event that is becoming
known throughout the northeast for the level of authors on its roster
and the diversity of its literary events (www.brattleboroliteraryfestival.org).
Among our achievements, in recent years, Write Action has instituted
an annual writing contest for poetry and prose; has established Brattleboro
Union High School senior awards for creative writing and journalism
(The Marty Jezer Award for excellence in Journalism); sponsors “Poets
of the Past”, a monthly in-depth reading and discussion of
favorite poets, held 3rd Sundays at Twilight Tea Lounge (www.twilighttealounge.com);
has published booklets and one anthology of local writing (The
Best of Write Action).
Write Action has collaborated with arts organizations such as the
co-operatively owned and run Windham Art Gallery (www.windhamartgallery.com),
the Vermont Jazz Center (www.vtjazz.org),
and Luminz Dance Studio (www.luminzstudio.com).
Write Action has also worked with town organizations on projects
such as The Brattleboro Historical Society’s panels that describe
in poetry and prose familiar downtown businesses and
locales. These panels, encased in weatherproof frames, have been
displayed downtown in an outdoors space, and are currently under
consideration by BaBB to be installed in the River Garden, a town-owned
public building. Funding for these projects have come from The Crosby
Foundation, Dunham-Mason Foundation, Brattleboro Savings & Loan,
and the Vermont Arts Council.
The annual picnic, usually held at the home of a Write Action board
member, is a social event and open reading, a chance to “network” and “shmooze”.

is entitled to one free update a year. More than that will cost $15
per update.
A simple directory listing with web link or other contact info is
free.
Click on “Members” at www.writeaction.net to
view a prototype web page.
